At Astute, our mission is to recruit great people to power a sustainable world—but our impact goes far beyond recruitment.

As a specialist energy recruitment agency, our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy is built around three key pillars:

    • Environmental sustainability
    • Community and charity support
    • Fundraising and volunteering initiatives

Through these initiatives, we actively support the communities we live and work in while contributing to a more sustainable future.

    Environmental CSR: Protecting Our Coastline

As part of our environmental CSR initiatives, the Astute team partnered with The Final Straw Foundation for a beach clean at Eastney.

The day began with a briefing from the charity’s COO, highlighting the scale of ocean pollution—up to 12 million tonnes of plastic entering our seas each year—and how collective action can make a real difference.

Equipped with litter-pickers, gloves, and bags, the team worked together to remove waste from the coastline, including plastic bottles, fishing nets, and general debris.

While the scale of the issue is significant, initiatives like this demonstrate how small, consistent actions contribute to long-term environmental impact—a value closely aligned with our work in renewable energy recruitment.

Community CSR: Supporting Families Through Cancer

Supporting people is at the core of everything we do—not just professionally, but within our wider community.

A visit to Jean’s House in Southampton, run by Young Lives vs Cancer, reinforced the importance of this commitment.

Wynand Barnard, Marketing Assistant at Astute, said:

“It was a privilege to visit the Young Lives vs Cancer team at Jean’s House and hear moving testimonies of the huge impact the charity has on people’s lives.

“At Astute, we are passionate about contributing to our local community and supporting local initiatives like Jean’s House, which helps families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them.

“Young Lives vs Cancer want families affected by cancer to thrive, not just survive, Astute is proud to join them on their mission.”

Jean’s House provides free accommodation for families during cancer treatment, helping them stay close during incredibly challenging times—removing both financial and emotional strain.

Charity of the Year: Focused Impact

Each year, Astute selects a Charity of the Year, enabling us to focus our fundraising and volunteering efforts where they can make the greatest impact.

    Young Lives vs Cancer

Our partnership with Young Lives vs Cancer has driven a range of fundraising initiatives and awareness campaigns.

Terry Buckel, Founder and CEO of Astute, said: “We are proud to support Young Lives vs Cancer, a charity that helps children, young people and their families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them.”

“The cause is close to the hearts of many at Astute, with personal ties to Young Lives vs Cancer’s incredible work.

“We’re not just walking the 50 kilometres for Young Lives vs Cancer, we’re walking for our colleagues, families, and everyone whose life has been touched by cancer.”

“People is one of our core values. Placing people at the forefront of Astute means we strive to make a positive difference to everyone who interacts with us.

“But we also believe in powering change and giving back to our community.

“This challenge is a testament to our commitment to making a difference, one step at a time.

“Small steps make big changes, and we’ll be taking countless steps this year.”

    Fundraising Initiatives: Driving Real Impact

    50km Charity Hike

As part of our CSR fundraising strategy, the Astute team completed a 50km hike and participated in additional events such as the Great South Run and international challenges.

Liz Blunt, Senior Fundraising Engagement Manager at Young Lives vs Cancer, said:

“We can only provide specialist tailored care that’s practical, emotional and financial for children and young people with cancer (babies to 25 year olds) and their families thanks to wonderful companies like Astute and their fantastic employees.

“A massive thank you to everyone involved in these challenges.”

    100km South Coast Ultra Challenge

Fourteen members of the Astute team took on the 100km South Coast Ultra Challenge to raise funds for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA).

Matt Dickens, Director at Astute People, said: “At Astute, we’re committed not just to our professional roles but also to making a difference in the community.

“The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance is an incredible charity that provides life-saving critical care across the region.

“We’re proud to support them and are thankful to everyone who has contributed to our fundraising efforts.

“This challenge is a true test of endurance but knowing that we’re helping such a vital cause makes every step worthwhile.”

Natalie Russell, Supporter Engagement Officer at HIOWAA, added: “Everyone at the HIOWAA wishes the Astute team the best of luck with their mammoth effort in the South Coast Ultra Challenge.

“Their determination to support our mission is truly inspiring.

“Every pound they raise helps us continue providing life-saving critical care across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight and we can’t thank them and their supporters enough for their generosity.”

Charity Partnership: Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance

Astute selected Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) as Charity of the Year 2024, reinforcing our commitment to supporting life-saving services.

Sam Bradshaw, Head of People at Astute, said: “We’re so pleased to be working with such an incredible charity following our company-wide vote for Charity of the Year 2024.

“Having staff with a personal connection to HIOWAA means that we understand the support they give to those in life-threatening situations.

“We are fully committed to achieving whatever we can to raise much-needed funds this year.”

HIOWAA operates 365 days a year, delivering advanced pre-hospital critical care and relying entirely on public and corporate support to continue its work.

CSR in Energy Recruitment: A Long-Term Commitment

CSR at Astute isn’t a one-off initiative—it’s embedded in how we operate as a renewable energy recruitment partner.

From supporting environmental causes and local charities to organising large-scale fundraising challenges, our approach reflects our belief that businesses should create measurable, positive impact.

By aligning our CSR strategy with our work in the energy sector, we’re not only helping companies hire the right people—we’re also helping build a more sustainable and socially responsible future.
