Energy Recruitment CSR is at the heart of how Astute gives back, and this month that meant visiting Jean’s House in Southampton, a “home from home” run by Young Lives vs Cancer, supporting families of children undergoing cancer treatment at Southampton Hospital.
The facility reduces travel, financial, and emotional pressures by providing free accommodation and essential day-to-day support. Astute remains committed to ESG-driven community partnerships that reflect our values across the energy recruitment sector, and this visit is part of our wider Energy Recruitment CSR strategy.
Astute recently had the privilege of visiting Jean’s House in Southampton, a home from home run by our Charity of the Year, Young Lives vs Cancer.
Jean’s House provides essential accommodation and support for children and young people receiving cancer treatment at Southampton Hospital, significantly reducing travel time, costs, and disruption for families.
Families facing a childhood cancer diagnosis experience immense emotional and financial pressure. Jean’s House helps ease this burden by providing stability, comfort, and proximity to care when it is needed most. This visit builds on Astute’s earlier fundraising work, including raising £10,000 for Young Lives vs Cancer through a series of team endurance challenges.
What Jean’s House Provides
Originally a B&B, Jean’s House has been transformed into a dedicated support facility offering a safe and welcoming environment for families.
The property now includes seven en-suite bedrooms, shared living spaces, and family-focused amenities designed to support long-term stays during treatment cycles.
A large open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area creates a communal yet comfortable environment, while a dedicated games room offers children and teenagers space to relax away from treatment pressures.
Each family is also provided with their own storage cupboard, stocked with essential supplies such as toiletries and food to reduce daily stress.
Energy Recruitment CSR in Action: Visiting Jean’s House
During our visit, Sam Bradshaw, Astute’s Head of People, toured the facility and met the dedicated staff who support families every day.
Sam also donated items from our office food bank, helping to provide immediate practical support to families staying at Jean’s House.
One of the most urgent ongoing needs identified is cleaning supplies, ensuring a consistently safe and hygienic environment for immunocompromised children and their families.
Astute will be returning to Jean’s House to establish a new Donation Bank, with a focus on collecting essential cleaning supplies to support this critical need. Visits like this sit alongside the wider community and wellbeing work covered in our Corporate Social Responsibility programme, and our broader Energy Recruitment CSR strategy, which spans charitable partnerships, sustainability commitments, and workforce wellbeing initiatives across the business.

The house is named in memory of Jean O’Gorman and her brother Paul, whose legacy inspired the creation of multiple “home from home” facilities across the UK through Children with Cancer UK and Young Lives vs Cancer.
Their story continues to shape vital support services for families affected by childhood cancer, ensuring comfort, dignity, and proximity to care remain central to treatment journeys.
