Recent labor market data from the ONS shows a decline in open vacancies for contractors, but demand for energy contractor jobs remains strong across the UK’s power, nuclear and renewable sectors.
However, Tania Bowers, Global Public Policy Director at the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo), confirms that contractor vacancies remain above one million.
She adds, “It is crucial that recruiters don’t lose sight of the fact that it is still a tight talent market, and skills gaps are growing despite monthly declines.”
We spoke to Astute’s Senior Recruiters to share their insights on energy contractor jobs and recruitment trends across Power, Renewable, and Nuclear sectors.
Energy Contractor Jobs Insights: Astute’s View
Daniel Don, Head of Sales, said, “There’s a real talent shortage in nuclear. We encourage clients to consider candidates with transferable skills from other industries, or those who can be upskilled.”
Kevin Over, Commercial Director, added, “High demand exists for contractors, particularly in construction projects across the UK and overseas. White-collar professionals in management structures are in particular demand.”
Lucy Pook, Senior Recruitment Partner for Energy-from-Waste (EfW), highlighted the need for Health and Safety roles in construction, with Safety Advisors, Managers, and Administrators in high demand. She explains, “Projects are time-specific, often two to three years, so contractors are the ideal solution.”
James Barker, Senior Recruitment Partner, noted, “District Heating and Decarbonisation sectors are experiencing exceptional demand due to over £1bn in government investment.”
Dan adds, “In Nuclear, professional qualifications such as HNC/HND, SMSTS, SSSTS, and CSCS are attractive, but experience often outweighs formal qualifications.” Kevin emphasizes the importance of health and safety credentials in Power projects, alongside mechanical, electrical, and project management experience.
Energy Contractor Jobs: Day Rates and Market Trends
In Power, project managers command £300-400/day, while managers can earn £400-800/day depending on project size, contract length, and budget. In Nuclear, most roles fall inside IR35, but clients are open to rate adjustments to compensate.
