Rooftop Solar Could Provide 65% of Global Electricity

    Covering the world’s rooftops with solar panels could provide the majority of global electricity and lower global temperatures by 0.13°C, according to new research by the University of Sussex.

    Rooftop solar could supply 65% of global electricity

    Rooftops cover approximately 286,000 km² globally—similar in size to Italy or New Zealand. If every suitable roof was used, photovoltaic solar (rooftop PV) could generate 19,500 TWh per year.

    This would supply 65% of current global electricity demand and almost completely replace fossil fuel-based power, especially when paired with load shifting and battery storage solutions.

    Advanced climate models show that widespread rooftop solar deployment by 2050 could significantly reduce global warming, with 0.13°C being a meaningful contribution. A 2023 Nature study estimates that for every 0.1°C increase above current levels, an additional 140 million people face dangerous heat exposure.

    Researchers say rooftop solar outperforms nuclear

    Researchers urge policymakers to prioritise rooftop solar, citing its superior value compared to nuclear power. Prof. Felix Creutzig, University of Sussex, said: “Solar is now outcompeting nuclear power in cost, deployment speed, and environmental risks. Governments should shift incentives toward rooftop PV for immediate carbon reduction benefits.”

    Solar energy costs have fallen dramatically over the past decade. Data from the International Renewable Energy Agency shows solar electricity costs range from £30–£50/MWh, while new nuclear projects like Small Modular Reactors cost £100–£150/MWh.

    “Beyond carbon savings, reducing fossil fuel dependence improves air quality and energy security,” added Dr. Creutzig.

    “With so much untapped solar potential, investment in nuclear or unproven carbon capture is hard to justify.”

    Global solar potential varies by region

    The paper highlights the need for global cooperation. Despite Africa’s abundant solar resources, it only accounts for 1% of rooftop PV installations. East Asia has the highest potential due to high carbon intensity and dense building stocks, while North America and Europe could contribute over 4,300 GW (25% of global potential).
